Mapping Firn Saturation Over Greenland Using NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive Satellite

چکیده
Mapping the spatial extent of recently identified englacial hydrological features (i.e., ice slabs and perennial firn aquifers) formed by meters-thick water-saturated layers over percolation facies Greenland Ice Sheet using L-band microwave radiometry has been demonstrated. However, these initial maps are binary, do not provide a parameter to estimate variability in thickness volumetric fraction meltwater stored within pore space. Here, we exploit enhanced-resolution vertical-polarization brightness temperature ($T_{V}^{B}$) imagery (2015–2019) generated observations collected NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite simple two-layer model. We map via “firn saturation” parameter, interpret our results together with slab aquifer extents, estimates snow accumulation simulated Regional Atmospheric Climate Model (RACMOp2.3), airborne radar surveys Operation IceBridge (OIB) campaigns. find that variable saturation values mapped lower areas western, northern, northeastern Greenland, where is colder seasonally refreeze as solid-ice. Higher higher southeastern, southern, northwestern near melting point, exist. Our have implications for identifying expansive reservoirs store significant volumes locations vulnerable meltwater-induced hydrofracturing accelerated outlet glacier flow year-round.

Active Passive Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture
1.0 INTRODUCTION Numerous studies have shown the influence of soil moisture on the feedbacks between landsurface and climate, which in turn affect the dynamics of the atmosphere boundary layer and have a direct relationship to weather and global climate (Shukla and Mintz, 1982). Chang, et al., 1991 have shown the influence of spatial variations of soil moisture and vegetation on the development...
متن کاملThe Soil Moisture Active Passive Experiments (SMAPEx): Towards Soil Moisture Retrieval from the SMAP Mission
21 NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission will carry the first combined spaceborne L-22 band radiometer and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system with the objective of mapping near-23 surface soil moisture and freeze/thaw state globally every 2-3 days. SMAP will provide three soil 24 moisture products; (i) high-resolution from radar (~3km), (ii) low-resolution from radiometer 25 (~3...
متن کاملSoil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document
Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs) provide the physical and mathematical descriptions of the algorithms used in the generation of science data products. The ATBDs include a description of variance and uncertainty estimates and considerations of calibration and validation, exception control and diagnostics. Internal and external data flows are also described. The SMAP ATBDs were revie...

متن کاملSoil moisture active and passive microwave products: intercomparison and evaluation over a Sahelian site
This paper presents a comparison and an evaluation of five soil moisture products based on satellite-based passive and active microwave measurements. Products are evaluated for 2005–2006 against ground measurements obtained from the soil moisture network deployed in Mali (Sahel) in the framework of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis project. It is shown that the accuracy of the soil...
